Hey adventures! I am so excited to announce two upcoming TTRPGs: Fathomfarer and Skellies! Oh, and before I bury the lede: You can read and playtest these systems *right now* at saddleb.ag/ttrpgs, or check my highlighted story! In brief, Fathomfarer (FF) is a TTRPG for players and GMs that want to try something other than Fifth Edition, but don’t want to learn an even more advanced set of rules or throw rules out altogether. Fathomfarer aims to keep a similar level of mechanical nuance while removing wasted rolls, turns, and levels. It also sets out to rebuild the missing pillars in Fifth Edition, making Exploration and Social Encounters as interesting and satisfying to take part in as Combat. Players can determine their own successes and failures, work together to overcome group challenges, and always feel like they’re making an impact based on their contributions. If you like Fifth Edition but don’t want to forget everything you’ve ever learned to go adventuring again, Fathomfarer may be a fun and quick alternative to try! Skellies, on the other hand, is a rules-lite approach with a focus on hijinks and a Scooby Doo level of seriousness. In it, you play a reanimated skeleton, or skelly, whose greatest purpose in life—err, undeath—is to impress and serve the lich that raised it. Skellies is designed to be a pick-up-and-play game for sessions where you’re down a player, or just as an in-between break for intense moments in your main game’s storyline. Of course, you can absolutely play a longer form campaign of Skellies just as easily! Your skelly will collect treasures from invading adventurers to pay tribute to your lich, who will in turn grant you additional bones to fortify yourself with, or coveted dark blessings to alter your very being! Rolls are simple (using entirely d6s), with very minimal things to track. Relax and have fun: you’re already dead! I hope you decide to check out these ongoing projects of mine, and try them for yourself, at saddleb.ag/ttrpgs! Keep on adventuring! -g ___ ✨ Patrons get huge perks! Access this and hundreds of other item cards, art files, and compendium entries when you support The Griffon's Saddlebag on Patreon for less than $10 a month!

Good morning Hawkins in my daily struggle to power through Flight of Icarus despite my problems with it, I present to you:
Eddie Munson x Reader Headcanons - Hellfire Club Edition
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: Y’all I am fucking STOKED! I’m finally meeting up with some old buddies this Saturday to play D&D again for the first time in four years! Me and my friends have been trying to find someone to DM for us for a while (my lover doesn’t want to which is totally fair). And I fell in love with Eddie helping Gareth make his new character in Flight of Icarus, and I feel like we have a significant lack of Reader in Hellfire Club headcanons. So, from one D&D nerd to the community, please enjoy these headcanons which is basically just me gushing for five hours about D&D.
For context: Let’s say Hellfire Club meets Fridays in the Drama Room after school hours.
Okay, first and foremost, Eddie plays Advanced Dungeons and Dragons in 1986 like its 2024 fifth edition in Hellfire Club.
Flight of Icarus got one thing right: Eddie doesn’t give a shit about rules half the time. While it’s a great guideline to start off from, I feel like Eddie would be big on homebrewing.
There may be some homebrew campaigns and a good majority of the storyline in the main campaign is improv, but that doesn’t stop him from respecting if there are players who want to follow the game rules.
He will tease the shit out of a rules lawyer though.
I can see Mike Wheeler as the rules lawyer at first, only to be thoroughly humbled by the first homebrew one shot Eddie put him in.
Eddie will either help you make a character in private or with the boys in case you need more brains to help explain things to you.
If you’re really new, he has his own private session 0 with you to roll for stats. He will meticulously go through all of your character’s details with you and help explain things no matter how many times you ask. He’s very patient, and he loves when you ask him questions.
It makes him feel happy you care so much about his hobbies!
Another big one: Eddie allows multi classing. You wanna be a Cleric who was torn from their order and forced into a life of crime as a Rogue?
“Bitchin’. We love a sassy holy member of the clergy that’s reverted to a life of crime. Let’s decide together how many levels you want in each class.”
You want to go for a specific subclass that cancels out your main class? *cough DRUID cough*
“Fuck it babe. I’ll allow you to keep your armor proficiencies, your spells, AND I’ll lift the requirements for castle worship only. Your Druid can pray for cleric spells in the woods.”
Hellfire Club is literally so relaxing even though there are insults thrown every five minutes and you might find yourself making enemies for the few hours Hellfire Club meets. But it’s not serious. It’s all in good fun and everyone makes up after.
Eddie often uses the Rule of Cool: If you make it sound cool, he’ll allow it in a campaign.
HOWEVER…
Eddie Munson is your sweetheart, your love of your life, your one, but he is a fucking BASTARD of a DM sometimes.
If you get a high roll, he will throw all manner of shit at you in a campaign.
You have a tanky build? Try soloing five groups in a row with no healer bitch.
Spellcaster with a high level arsenal of spells? Your long rests to regain spell slots will never know peace.
Cleric with high level healing spells? Woe, Silence be upon thee.
This mother fucker will not go easy on you if you’re a first timer, but thankfully he will explain to you in detail what he’s doing, what he’s rolling for, etc.
But that’s only for your first game and only because you’re his baby.
If you have a solid idea of how to play, good luck bro. You’re gonna need it.
You, Jeff and Frank collectively (jokingly) plan to one day jump Eddie after school if he continues his traditions of thinking of sadistic ways to kill your first character for a new class.
You tried to warn the freshmen about Eddie’s bullshit but they didn’t believe you. Especially Dustin, who defended Eddie to the death and chastised you for calling Eddie a “shit licking whore” of a DM because hey, that’s your boyfriend! Be nice to him!
… Dustin now only refers to the DM’s commentaries as “And now a word from our Shit Licking Whore…”
I can see Eddie becoming one of those DMs whose goal is to fucking win at all costs even though it’s really not the point but… you know. He seems like he’d have a competitive streak.
Based on Experience: You make eight in Hellfire Club. For a normal campaign that’s way too many goddamn people and turns can take fucking forever. Eddie often gets impatient and hates when the campaigns get mind numbing.
So Eddie’s devised this solution: One Shots have to be rolled for with a d20 to determine who gets to be one of four players, winners need the highest scores of the group. Hellfire Club’s main campaign though is anything goes, Eddie alone DMs, and all Hellfire Club members can play. Because the main is anything goes, it’s also the hardest. And once your character is dead, there’s no revives. The main campaign is not the most newbie friendly. You can opt out of it if you don’t feel comfortable with the main campaign.
The one shots are mainly official campaigns from the sourcebooks, but there are some homebrew ones allowed as long as Eddie checks them over first. These ones are the easier games to get into.
Eddie will allow anyone who wants to DM a chance to DM these one shots, because he honestly gets sick of being the forever DM and actually wants to play sometimes.
You prefer Eddie as a player because he will strategize beforehand with everyone while he rolls up a character. He will base his decision on everyone else’s, fulfilling any role you need. He also will help explain to you about certain encounters or walk you through picking spells or such as you level up.
If you need help while Eddie DMs, the best people to sit with are Gareth, Jeff, and Mike. Gareth and Jeff have the most knowledge about how spells work and helping you to walk through what would benefit the party. Mike is an invaluable tool to have being a former DM, and while he may get annoyed if you ask too many questions, he can tell you just about anything regarding abilities, monsters, or what effects certain spells have. He’ll also help you pick a weapon proficiency that matches your character’s needs.
If you need cheering up, sit next to Dustin or Frank. Franks got the depression snacks in clutch and Dustin will try to cheer you up if your character dies in a famous Eddie Munson death scene.
Dice Jail for Bad And Naughty Traitor Dice get thrown in a mason jar by Eddie’s DM screen. He shakes the jar full of the shitty dice and you all have to scream “SHUN THE TRAITORS”.
Eddie keeps his dice in a Crown Royal drawstring bag. I said what I said.
He even buys a bottle of Crown Royal for you so you have a matching bag for your dice too.
You best believe anything you need to start off the campaign, Eddie is going to buy it for you.
I will only say this once: Session 0 is the best day ever in Hellfire Club. Eddie goes all out: Pizza, drinks, snacks, candy, music, a little bit of the devil’s lettuce, he goes all fucking out.

So I know you arent a fan of talking about Euclydia, but I am curious about how it functioned. How did 2D people eat? Did they eat at all? Did they have organs? Was it like that movie Flatland?
IT'S TRUE, I REALLY DON'T LIKE TO TALK ABOUT IT THAT MUCH, BUT GIVEN THE FLOOD OF DISINFORMATION THAT'S BEEN GOING AROUND LATELY, I GUESS I SHOULD TRY, HUH? LENGTH CUT.
AS FOR FLATLAND: KIND OF SORT OF. VISUALLY NOT TOO FAR OFF. SOCIALLY, LESS DERANGED BUT STILL PRETTY GREY AND SOCIALLY STRATIFIED. IRREGULARS NO GOOD AND DEPENDING ON THE CIRCUMSTANCE, WERE EITHER EXILED OR FORCIBLY SURGICALLY EDITED INTO REGULARS. THINGS WERE FINE AS LONG AS NOBODY ASKED TOO MANY QUESTIONS OF THE RULING CIRCLES. BUT EVERYONE HAD JOBS AND HOBBIES AND STUFF AND THERE WEREN'T ANY LINE SEGMENTS. GENDER? TOO CONFUSING TO EVERYONE SO NOBODY REALLY CARED. YOUR SHAPE DETERMINED YOUR FATE. 'SOCIAL HARMONY' WAS A REALLY BIG DEAL. STAY IN YOUR PLACE, PERFORM YOUR ROLE, AND THE WHOLE SOCIETY SWIMS ALONG HAPPILY LIKE A LITTLE SHAPELY CLOCKWORK. ACTUALLY THE PAC-MAN GAME BOARD IS A GOOD VISUAL REFERENCE HERE IF YOU WANT TO IMAGINE LOOKING DOWN ON THE PLANE FROM ABOVE. THE RULES STATED YOU COULD LOOP AROUND FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER, BUT NOT PASS THROUGH WALLS. YOU COULD NOT GO 'UNDER' SOMETHING, WHICH MADE CREATING INDOOR PLUMBING A PRETTY UNIQUE CHALLENGE. NO STAIRS, NO BASEMENTS, NO UPPER FLOORS.
THEY HAVE ONE OR MORE EYES DEPENDING ON THE SHAPE, SOME HAD EYES AT EACH VERTEX AND THAT WAS NORMAL. THOSE EYES COULD BE REGENERATED OR UNMADE AT WILL, AND SHAPES WITH SINGLE EYES COULD MOVE THEIR EYE ALONG THEIR PERIMETER, SO THEY COULD NAVIGATE IN THEIR LITTLE MAZE PLANE, BUT NOT SEE ANYTHING BUT RIGHT IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY. THEY ALL HAD SOFT CORNERS THOUGH, SO IF THEY BUMPED INTO THINGS IT WAS JUST A TAP, NOT A POKE. THEIR EYES COULD NOT MOVE INTO THE CENTER, LIKE MINE CAN. SO THEY COULDN'T LOOK 'UP' AT ALL.
FOR WHATEVER REASON, MY EYE JUST MOVES ALONG BOTH THE PERIMETER AND AREA. I PREFER TO KEEP MINE IN THE CENTER OF MY AREA NOW FOR VARIOUS REASONS, BUT I CAN ALSO MAKE AS MANY EYES AS I WANT. ORGANS ARE NOT VISIBLE TO OTHERS INSIDE EUCLYDIA, BUT BEINGS OF THIRD OR HIGHER DIMENSION CAN SEE STRAIGHT THROUGH THEM AND YEAH, THE GUTS AND BRAIN AND STUFF ALL WRIGGLE AROUND AND TWIST LIKE RIBBONS INSIDE THEM.
LIKE SILLY STRAWS ████ ████VELE█ ███O ██E ██Y ████ ██Y ███ ███E███E█ ███ ███E███E█ ███
...UH. SORRY, BLACKED OUT FOR A SECOND THERE.
TO BE FAIR THOUGH, HUMANS ARE THE SAME FROM THE FIFTH DIMENSION UP; TO ME, YOU'RE FLAT! I SEE YOU IN SLICES AND HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION AND SHIFT MY FOCUS OR DROP MYSELF A FEW DIMENSIONS TO YOUR LEVEL IF I WANT TO SEE WHAT YOU ACTUALLY 'LOOK' LIKE TO EACH OTHER WITH SKIN ON AND ALL. LOTS OF FOOD WAS AVAILABLE. IT WAS JUST FLAT LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE. FLAT TREES, FLAT PLANTS WITH SHALLOW SURFACE ROOTS. NOODLES LIKE SPAGHETTI WERE VERY BIG IN EUCLYDIA BECAUSE THEY WERE VERY EASY TO INGEST AND VERY FILLING. DIGESTIVE SYSTEMS WORKED LIKE YOU'D EXPECT, AND THEY ATE WITH THEIR EYEMOUTHS JUST LIKE ME.
IT WAS ADVANCED ENOUGH OF A CIVILIZATION TO HAVE INTERPLANETARY TRAVEL. LOTS OF EUCLYDIANS COMMUTED TO EXWHYLIA THROUGH A DEDICATED SPACETIME TUNNEL FOR WORK AND PLAY REASONS AND VICE VERSA, THERE WAS PLENTY OF MONETARY EXCHANGE HAPPENING. NOT AS MUCH CULTURAL. EUCLYDIANS TENDED TO BE SUSPICIOUS OF EXWHYLIANS AND DIDN'T LET THEM HOLD CERTAIN KINDS OF JOBS. TOLERATED, USED AS CHEAP LABOR, BUT NOT REALLY CONSIDERED 'EQUAL' IN EUCLYDIA, EXWHYLIANS.
ANYWAY THAT'S AS MUCH AS I FEEL LIKE SAYING NOW.

What’s the Deal With Casino Rewards and Luxury Casino?
Whenever you look for an online casino in Canada, you always seem to Rai88 stumble upon a Casino Rewards casino. They are literally everywhere. The main reason is they have 17 popular online casinos under their umbrella. But lately it seems like one brand has stood out more than the rest: Luxury Casino.
What makes this casino so popular and why is everyone talking about it? Let’s find out.
Luxury Casino
Luxury Casino is the premium brand within the Casino Rewards network. The casino has been around since 2001 and is licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and iGaming Ontario. In other words, this is a secure and regulated online casino. Perfect for Canadians and particularly Ontarians.
Their game selection isn’t too shabby either. Their suite is primarily powered by Microgaming, but they also have games from Sling Shot Studios, Alchemy Gaming, Stormcraft Studios, all41studios, Gameburger Studios, Neon Valley Studios, Pear Fiction Studios, Pulse 8 Studios, Fortune Factory Studios, Switch Studios, and Triple Edge Studios. Their live casino games are from Evolution Gaming.
So when it comes to slots, you’ll find hot titles like Immortal Romance 2, Agent Jane Blonde Max Volume, Fire and Roses Joker, Thunderstruck Stormchaser, Lara Croft: Tomb of the Sun, 9 Masks of Fire, and many many more.
According to Dana Nikolic's Luxury Casino review at eCheckCasinos.ca, "The game library features titles with premium themes and superior graphics, often including exclusive or limited-edition games. For example, the brand offers the official Game of Thrones slot via HBO licensing."
They also have a lot of table games like Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat, and even Video Poker and progressive jackpot games.
Bonuses and Promotions
Luxury Casino offers a generous welcome package of $1k spread across the first five deposits. The bonuses are as follows:
First Deposit: 100% match up to $150
Second Deposit: 50% match up to $200
Third Deposit: 25% match up to $300
Fourth Deposit: 50% match up to $200
Fifth Deposit: 100% match up to $150
Just keep in mind that these bonuses come with wagering requirements that must be met before any winnings can be withdrawn.
Loyalty Program
As part of the Casino Rewards network, Luxury Casino participates in a unified loyalty program. That basically means that the more you play, the more loyalty points you earn. And these can later be redeemed across any casino in the network. The VIP program features multiple levels, offering increasingly valuable benefits and exclusive promotions as you advance.
Security and Fair Play
Player security is a top priority at Luxury Casino. The site uses a hardcore SSL encryption to protect your personal and financial information, so a middleman attack won’t leak your info. Moreover, the games are regularly audited by eCOGRA. This is an independent testing agency and one of the most reputable in the industry. So you can be sure the games are fair and fully legit.
Customer Support
Luxury Casino provides 24/7 customer support through live chat and email. To be fully honest, their livechat sucks. It absolutely sucks. You start out by talking to a robot and it takes forever to get connected to a human agent. And when you finally get connected to a human agent, you’ll be slamming your keyboard with your fist. It feels like their human agents aren’t part of the Casino Rewards at all. There is just so much info they don’t have ready at hand. So if there’s anything negative we have to say about this casino, it’s the customer support. It’s actually the only negative thing we could find. We just hope the VIP support is better. Although to be fair, customer support isn’t much better elsewhere with the trend we are seeing now to replace agents with AI bots.

[ad_1] Nihal Sarin (Image: GCL) Triveni Continental Kings snatched a thriller of a win against Alpine SG Pipers to seal the second spot in the final of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL). In the second edition of this unique, franchise-based league in the game of 64 squares, PBG Alaskan Knights had already ensured passage to the summit clash by the ninth and penultimate round. Nihal Sarin of the Knights is the lone Indian to be featuring in the final. This is a bit of a low for the country that claimed an emphatic double-gold feat at the recent Chess Olympiad. There were nine of them in the fray spread across the six teams. Viswanathan Anand’s side, Ganges Grandmasters, finished at the bottom. Mumba Masters with four Indians were fifth. The Pipers with R Praggnanandhaa in their ranks lost a humdinger against the Kings. In the 10th round, the match between Triveni Continental Kings and Alpine SG Pipers was a virtual shootout for the remaining place in the final of the event held in London. In a cracker of a contest, the Kings prevailed 9-7. They finished level on 18 points with the Pipers and advanced on the basis of their superior tiebreak score of 99-88. The Knights finished with a tally of 24 points. Among the several talking points from the last round of the double-leg, round-robin competition was the ouster of the Pipers. Magnus Carlsen gave them a resounding start by defeating Alireza Fioruzja 4-0 on the top board. Firouzja, of Iranian origin representing France, has been one of the best players of the event. Carlsen’s win was a big boost for his team. R Praggnanandhaa, Richard Rapport and Hou Yifan drew their games to retain the advantage handed to the Pipers by Carlsen. The match turned on its head on the last two boards. Valentina Gunina and Javokhir Sindarov posted 3-0 wins to give the Kings a memorable win. The closeness of this duel was an indicator of how keenly contested this competition is. Having already made the final before the 10th round, PBG Alaskan Knights came up with a comprehensive display against American Gambits, who were out of contention. It was a narrow affair still, until the fourth game, with the Knights leading 6-5. Alina Kashlinskaya scored a 4-0 win to seal this tie. Sarin won by the same margin on Board 6. Time revision and reflection 5
Tumblr media
This is my fifth and last time management and reflection blog post for this project. Following my new time schedule that I have set for myself after obtaining an extension, I am currently on track to finishing my work before the 28th of August, which is the day of the deadline and presentation. As I have already finished creating all of my environment's material, and have already started experimenting with camera angles and deciding on what parts of the landscape to use, I am now ready to begin importing all of the assets into Unreal Engine 5, set up the materials and begin populating the scenes.
I would have liked to allocate a bit more time for working on setting up the environment, which would have allowed for multiple iterations or versions that I could choose from. Or I could have built the entire environment fully from scratch using the elements provided in the Unreal Engine Marketplace packs I am using. Nonetheless, I plan on making the best out of what I have, and having planned everything in advance is definitely going to help me assemble everything step by step. I had already began experimenting with some lighting, and sky atmosphere options before, alongside the new things I was learning from my research, but have not documented them in my blog posts as they constitute a really small portion of the actual work that I was undertaking for the past few weeks. Regardless, I will be talking about these creative decisions in the next few posts while explaining the reasoning behind them.
In the first few days of this upcoming period, I'll be focused on importing all the necessary assets and getting the foundational setup in place. This stage will be very important since any errors will affect everything that follows. Once that's done, I'll shift my attention to asset animations, making the elements dynamic and ensuring they align with the overall vision. After that, the focus will be on finalising the camera animations within the level sequence, tweaking how each shot transitions and making sure the timing is just right. With those tasks complete, I’ll move on to rendering, ensuring that everything looks polished and is visible in renders.
As I get closer to the deadline, the last three to four days will be dedicated to the final touches. I'll be working on my promotional video and cinematic video, applying post-processing effects, audio, and editing to make sure everything comes together nicely. During this time, I'll also be preparing for my presentation, making sure I can confidently showcase my work and communicate my ideas to the audience.

Combat Maneuvers: Traditions, Part I
Introduction So, I was poised, poised I tells ya, to dive into analysing each class individually like the berserker but then… In fine tradition, I decided that I probably don’t have all the bits. Since I’m not talking about basic DnD or even Black Flag but my beloved Level Up: Advanced Fifth Edition I expect the audience for this to be limited. If it turns out it’s not then I’ll just have to…

This 190 page sourcebook details 26 nations and regions across the Fair Continent with statistics for 100 NPCs in a realm of medieval fantasy often meddled with by an original pantheon of 18 gods. An entire academy of magic instructors, thieves' guilds galore, zealous priesthoods—there's even 18 new monsters in here including a draconic bunny. It also has new heritage options (like feylves and shadetouched), new class archetypes (including the fiery Doonfist Pistolero and greedy Oath of the Merchanteer), and more than a dozen new magic items! Pick it up for D&D 5E or Level Up: Advanced Fifth Edition—and don't forget to snag the Bonus Pack!

Ok so let me see what I can provide in terms of advice.
RULES
Curret edition of d&d is Fifth Edition a.k.a. 5e. It was released in 2014 but is now getting release of revised version of the books. You can meet terms 5.14 or 5e (2014) and 5.24, 5.5 or 5e (2024) to diffirentiate them.
Let me be clear: YOU DON'T NEED THE EXPENSIVE BOOKS TO PLAY. A large chunk of the rules is avialable for free. 2024 version is still being released but a large chunk is avialable in free playtest documents (mind you, if some stuff repeats, the version with higher numbered document is one closest to what's in the books).
If you do want the books, Player's Handbook is one most important, if you want to run the game yourself, consider Monster Manual and Dungeon Master's Guide. The latter in 2014 version is a lot of optional rules and is seen as a poorly put together product, so I wouldn't bother, 90% of GMs didn't read it either. The former has all the monsters, but I'll bo honest, monsters in official books by Wizards of the Coast are too weak and player characters from 5th level up often end just walking over level-appriopriate enemies. If you want something more challenging to thep layers, look either Tome of Beasts series by Kobold Press or Flee Mortals! by MCDM Publishing.
Which brings me to a bit of a tangent - there are lots of d&d adjecent books by other companies. I would take interest in them if you decide 5e is a game for you. Some of them have even made their own version of the game, like Kobold Press' Project Black Flag/Tales of the Valiant (free parts) or EN Publishing's Level Up! Advanced Fifth Edition (free parts). There is enough material there to play D&D without supporting directly Wizards of the Coast ever. BUT I would not take interest in this stuff until you actually tried the game and decided it is for you. Which it may not be. That is perfectly normal.
If you decide the game is not for you, some more pupular different games may scratch that inch better:
Pathfinder 2nd Edition - it is much more mechanically crunchy and tightly designed game that aims for similiar niche. It is more intimidating as an entry-level game but has a huge benefit in that ALL the rules are free online (see here) and you buy the books for their adventures and setting lore.
Savage Worlds - system designed for all kinds of genres as long as your game is fast, furious and fun. Works great for pulp/action genre.
FATE - more narrative system, siiliarly suppsoed to apply to all kinds of genres. Has two versions, FATE Core and much more simplified FATE Accelerated and FATE Condensed. Here are free rules.
Cypher System - another system supposedly able to run anything, it has a very catchy way of nailing down character concept to "I am an adjective noun who verbs".
PbtA - Powered by the Apocalypse. It's a family of narrativ, ficiton first systems that track their origins from game Apocalypse World. There are a lot of them, aiming for various niches - Fellowship is high fantasy, Masks: A New Generation is comic books like Young Avengers, Runaways, Teen Titans or Ms. Marvel, Monster of the Week is supernatural, well, monster of the week in vein of Buffy, Supernatural or Dresden Files, etc.
FitD - Forged in the Dark is a cousin of PbtA, still ficiton first but more mechanically grounded if you need mroe structure. Again, whole family of games aiming for their own niche - Blades in the Dark, the family's progenitor, is like Peaky Blinders with ghosts, Band of Blades is like Chronicles of the Black Company, Scum and Villainy is a space opera like Star Wars, Farscape or Firefly, etc.
OSR - name you may meet, short for Old School Resistance or Old School Revolution or Old Schoiol Revival, depending whom you ask. It generally takes rules from older editions of the games and remake them into new games. Some of them are avialable for free, like Swords & Wizardry.
There are also several games more tied to their own worlds (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying, Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk RED, World of Darkness, Traveller, Lancer, Dragonbane) or that expect you to make world with the players (Fabula Ultima, which is aiming for an anime/jrpg feel). There is also a bunch of new or upcoming games launched due to Wizards of the Coast pissing off the community last year - DC20, Daggerheart, Draw Steel, Nimble 5e to name a few. If none of those scratch your itch, I once again recommend excellent blog @theresattrpgforthat.
If you want to stick with D&D at begining, that is ok. If you feel it doesn't work, consider why. If you feel there is not enough rules and game is too unbalanced or chaotic, move towards crunchier games like Pathfinder, DC20 or Draw Steel. If there are too many rules and the game feels like doing taxes, move towards Daggerheart, Savage Worlds, Cypher, PbtA, FotD or FATE. If you feel PCs are too powerful and the game has no stakes, move towards OSR or Warhammer.
I will recommend that, if you are going to run, begin by gtting a starter adventure, often included in the game's base book or a starter set (D&D 5e has few such - Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragon of the Icespire Peak, Dragon of the Stormwreck Isles, Pathfinder has excellent Beginner Box), quickstart (several games like Dragonbane, Shadowdark have those) or beginenr adventure included in core rulebook. You are learning to run the game, which is learning dozen of new things at once. It is perfectly ok to take off the load of also plotting the adventure and setting it up by using a module until you feel you're ready to run your own original game.
FINDING PEOPLE
There are two ways at going at finding players. In person or online.
If you want to play in person, ask around your friends, roommates or family, be prepared you will have to be running the game. If you won't find anyone, check out your LGS - Local Game Store, either they should have free games or you can host one. If you don't have any, go to your local library and ask them to help you set up a game night there, be prepared you may be running. You may need to get extra stuff to play in person - a palce to run, a table, appriopriate dice, character sheet and pens for everyone. Possibly miniatures or tokens for combat. If you're a player the GM will likely take care of that.
If you want to play online, contact your online friends. If that doesn't work, you may go to Looking For Group section in places such as D&D Beyond, or Reddit (D&D, Pathfinder, general) or related to a VTT - Virtual Table Top - of your choice or Discord servers for games of your choice. Other places to find people include online forums, I recommend RPG.net, ENworld and Giant in the Playground. If you are running, I recommend setting up Discord server and getting a die-rolling bot.
WARNING: If you end up playing with strangers, you may run into creeps or assholes, that's the sad reality. So vetting people is important, especially if you're running the game. GM should look out for such red flags as: people who scoff at the idea of a session zero or safety tools (more below), express any sort of creepy or incel views (not limited to men, but if a guy acts like a wannabe Andrew Tate RUN TO THE HILLS), poor perosnal hygiene in irl games (you'll be sitting next to this guy for 4 hours a week on average), edgelord or main character behavior (including trying to bring some overpowered bs character), immediatelly trying to be contrary to the game's premise, throwing a fit if meet with a pushback or bragging about how many game masters they "broke". As a player, look out for GMs who don't run session zero or use safety tools or who complain that their games keep falling apart and blaming the players (use the "if you've meet an asshole, you've meet an asshole. If you keep meeting nothing but assholes, you're the asshole" principle).
If you are running the game, run session zero. Here is a very good checklist for one, I would also include character creation and content checklist (some good ones here and here). Also, safety tools worth considering: X-Card (a card anyone can tap whenever something triggering happens, signaling you skip the description or the scene), Lines & Veils (lines are things you never bring up in game, veils are things that can happen but only "off-screen" so to speak). Main point of session zero is to ensure you are all on the same page and nobody will bring up Witchunter General "Women & Children Too" Pointdexter, who wants to burn every book except the Bible and Malleus Maleficarum alongside those who read them, to a Magic School game.
Running and playing the game are super complex issues and require practice, like any skill. This post is too long already to get into the it, but there is a lot of advice out there. I recommend some of the following youtubers: Matt Colville's Running the Game, Seth Skorkovsky's RPG Philosophy, Sly Flourish - Lazy Dungeon Master, How to Be a Great GM.
This post should cover the basics. If you have more advanced questions, I recommend following @ladytabletop and @thydungeongal.
Alright. I want to start playing d&d, but it’s very daunting and I was wondering if anyone had any tips? I played one very basic campaign and I am great a character building but it seems super complicated. Also, I don’t really have a group to join, which is sad. But still, I would even DM myself just to play again.

Level Up: Advanced 5th Edition is the new RPG that adds depth and options to your 5E experience but avoids unnecessary complexity! Lots of love for the exploration pillar. Rethinking classes while keeping their core concepts. Meaningful decisions every time you level up. Modular heritage design. The journey can be the adventure. More! The dynamics, behind the scenes, and fiscal realities of Kickstarter campaigns. Stretch goal economics. Stretch goal fever. The U vs the hockey stick. Kicktraq and other services that "project" Kickstarter campaign totals. Revenue versus profit. Everyone has good ideas, executing a good idea is the hard part.

Next Project Reveal Time...
Hello, I’m still not dead!
So I might as well let you all in on the project I’m concocting now that the Relics trilogy is finished. It’s going to be long and difficult, but I’m really excited to see where it goes. This could get long, so I’ll put the details under the jump for those who are interested, but I’ll put the title and a few basics up here for all of y’all to see.
SHADOWRUN: NEON FIRE
Yeah, it’s cyber-elf time!
It’s a fan-game, which will be freely available in full to everyone on Dashingdon (I’m not trying to make a buck off someone else’s IP, I’m just trying to craft a tribute to one of my all-time favorite fictional universes!) The aim is to combine some of the best elements of IFs with some of the best elements of tabletop RPGs. It’ll be more statty that most IFs, and will make use of dice rolls and a simplified version of the Shadowrun 5th edition tabletop rules, but it will also make telling a great story with great characters and choice and consequence a high priority, thus hitting some of the more usual IF beats.
Don’t get too excited: it will still be a long time before anything gets posted (I want to make a particular point in the story before I unveil anything), but I’ll do my very best to make this thing actually happen!
More details below!
About the Project
For the uninitiated, Shadowrun is a beloved fantasy-cyberpunk tabletop roleplaying setting which has spawned six editions of the tabletop game, a huge number of novels, and multiple well-regarded video games going right back to the 90s. I flipping love Shadowrun. I love it so much that I’ll take on the ill-advised burden of trying to write a lengthy Choicescript story that uses actual Shadowrun RPG mechanics. It’s a famously dice-heavy game. That’ll be a lot of *rand variables, then.
Received wisdom seems to be that, in interactive fiction, detailed RPG mechanics and great stories with choice and consequence are mutually exclusive. I think that the received wisdom is wrong. This project is where I prove it, or go down in flames trying.
About the Shadowrun Universe
In the world of Shadowrun, human history is much longer than we currently believe. The earth projects a field of natural mana, which is the source of magic, and which waxes and wanes over very long periods of time. Every five thousand years, the earth's manasphere reawakens, and magic emerges into the mundane world, bringing with it dragons, spirits, creatures of legend and fantasy races. Then, five thousand years later, mana mysteriously recedes again, leading to the beginning of another mundane age. Every time magic either reappears or disappears, it produces tremendous civilization-level traumas leading to the collapse of human society and the need to rebuild from scratch. Until 2011, when magic reemerged in a technologically advanced world, ending the Fifth World and inaugurating the Sixth. For the first time, human society was robust enough to withstand the shock, and it (just about) held together. For the first time, magic and advanced technology needed to coexist.
The return of magic at the beginning of the twenty-first century had profound consequences. The old United States and Canada fragmented into multiple successor states, while wars and magically-awakened natural disasters racked much of the rest of the world. Animals began to mutate rapidly into magically-awakened versions of themselves: now hellhounds, devil rats, harpies and many other paracritters stalk the wilds. Babies started to be born who resembled the elves and dwarves of legend; as they grew and time passed, elven and dwarven culture developed along distinctive lines. Metahumanity diversified further with the phenomenon known officially as Unexplained Genetic Expression (UGE), and unofficially as "Goblinization", when, for unclear reasons, some people began to grow tusks and horns and thick green skin, undergoing dramatic and often agonizing transformations into orks and trolls. The majority of the Sixth World's inhabitants are still human, and a high proportion of humans are prejudiced against other metatypes, aligning themselves with human supremacist organizations like the notorious Humanis Policlub. Human supremacism has in turn spawned a violent response, in the form of militant metahuman supremacist groups across the globe. Different countries and regions have responded differently to the challenges of metadiversity, but everywhere tensions between metatypes are never far from the surface.
When magic reappeared, the great dragons reawakened. Impossibly majestic creatures who have lived through all the previous cycles of the world but who hibernate deep in the earth during mundane cycles, dragons rapidly established themselves as major power players in Sixth World society. Unimaginably subtle and intelligent, every dragon is a force to be reckoned with. Some have become heads of state, others CEOs or board members of megacorporations. You never truly know where you stand with them, hence one of the most common pieces of advice you'll hear in the shadows: "Never deal with a dragon".
Alongside the dragons, the real powers of the Sixth World are the corporations, and above all the Big Ten triple-A megacorporations: Ares Macrotechnology, Aztechnology, Evo, Horizon, Mitsuhama Computer Technologies (MCT), NeoNET, Renraku Computer Systems, Saeder-Krupp, Shiawase, and Wuxing. Any one of these corps could field a private military which would vastly overpower that of any nation state. Since 1999, the megas have enjoyed extraterritoriality, meaning that, on their own corporate property, they are exempt from local laws and responsible for their own policing and protection. Making every product and providing every service you could possibly imagine, these beasts often own lesser A- or AA-rated corps and seem unshakable in their global dominance.
In the cracks between the shining corporate enclaves you'll find the shadows, sprawling slums dominated by feral street-gangs and organized crime, inhabited by the desperate and the SINless (those who do not possess a System Identification Number, and are not considered productive citizens). The shadows are the natural home of shadowrunners, guns for hire, highly-skilled deniable mercenary criminals, often hired by corps or wealthy private clients to undertake shady acts of espionage and sabotage. And you will be one of them!
About Neon Fire
I’ll be posting more game-specific info in a future post, so I’ll just give you the basics now. In Neon Fire, you will create and play as an experienced shadowrunner in the Seattle Sprawl in the late 21st century. After a Seattle-based prologue mission designed to introduce the world and the rules, you’ll receive a puzzling message from a figure from your childhood, calling you away to the far side of the world. For the bulk of the game, you’ll be living in the Neo-Tokyo megasprawl, running the shadows with an all-new crew of (romanceable) fellow runners, while also investigating a mystery which will uncover secrets about your own past as well as a sinister conspiracy that threatens Neo-Tokyo’s future!
More details to follow soon. In the meantime, if you want to learn more about this setting, maybe try the video games Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. If you like fantastic RPGs with great writing, you’ll thank me - and you’ll get suitably psyched for Neon Fire!

Crest of the Dragon - Ch 13 : The Heylin Dragon Pt 1
Summary: Raimundo's transition to leadership isn't as easy as he makes it appear. Working together, the group tries to advance to the next level, but could the past be distracting them from the present? The fifth Dragon Warrior has yet to reveal themselves. FF.net
Start at the Beginning at Ao3
After a lot of debating, I decided to post the newest chapter before I finish editing the older ones. I hate FF.net shoving adds into the chapters, but that's where a majority of people read it still. I will keep updating the Ao3 one. I just got a lot of older stories I'm polishing at the same time.
I'm happy to talk about all things XS, though I'm a lil rusty on my trivia this story is still near and dear to my heart.
It has been literal years since I posted a new chapter (last one was in 2017 OmO)
As for "Why did this take so long?" after I got my RN license, I burnt out on all the stories I had been writing in college. This one in particular had a wall of writer's blocks. An ending I once had seen so clearly now seemed impossible to write. Between moving into my own place, my father's death and struggling with a toxic relationship, I just lost a lot of whimsy and the part of me that didn't have to be serious 24/7. I got hyper fixated with other series for a while, but I always regretted not being able to deliver the finale I promised for this one.
I'm now in a much better place mentally and it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders and I realized I had just made the ending a little too complicated. I'm about 1/3 into writing the next chapter (this sat in my drafts folder for a while and ended up needing major rewrites). I debated whether I should post this to FF given I'm still in the middle of editing and porting it over to Ao3, but I figured why not? (I'm trying to update the Ao3 one weekly, but irl stuff gets in the way sometimes.)
This is chapter 1/4. Three for the finale and an epilogue.
Thank you all for sticking around and sharing this story. It's what's kept me from orphaning it.
(Side note, y'all should also check out Warrior U >_> or talk to me about XS. Still on tumblr at worldismyne)
